HENSLEY, Richard Calvin Age 64, of West Carrollton passed away Thursday, August 18, 2005 at Hospice of Dayton. Dick was born on November 2, 1940 in Harlan, KY to Bert and Mary Bruce (Ball) of Lexington, Ky. He was preceded in death by his father. Dick is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carol, sister Rita (Jerome) Whitacre, Robert (Heather), daughter Barbara (George) Berggren, grandchildren Evan, Madelyn, Allison, Alexander, and Nicholas, and a host of family and friends. Also surviving is brother-in-law, Ed Ditmer, a very special care-giver who provided loving support to the family during Dick's illness. Dick graduated from West Carrollton High School in 1959 and earned a Bachelor's of Science in Education from Cumberland College in 1964. He was employed by the West Carrollton Board of Education as a 7th grade social studies teacher in the fall of 1964. In 1971 Dick earned a Master's Degree from Wright State University and in 1983 he was named principal of West Carrollton Junior High School. Dick held the position of Junior High School Principal until 1992 when he retired with distinction and honor. Dick also served as President and President-Elect of the West Carrollton Education Association and voted as a delegate at many Ohio Education Association (OEA) Representative Assemblies. As an administrator, Dick held a lifetime membership in OEA and continued his association by chairing a division of the secondary school administrators' annual conference. In 2003 Dick was inducted into the West Carrollton Education Foundation's Distinguished Service Hall of Fame for his life-long support of the entire West Carrollton Education Community. In 2005 the Foundation's Board of Directors honored Dick again for his continuing and generous support as trustee of the Dickinson T. Guiler Revocable Living Trust. In 2005, Dick's alma mater recognized his professional accomplishments and enerous support by awarding him an Honorary Doctorate in Educational Administration. Dick once observed "...the foundation of our democratic society rests on the premise that each individual has worth, that he desires self-respect, and defends the dignity of others." Always the teacher...Dick has lived his life by this simple credo and the students and community of West Carrollton have been forever enriched by his tireless contributions on their behalf. Rich's family would like to recognize and thank staff members at Sycamore and Kettering Hospitals for their care and compassion with special thanks to the extraordinary staff of Unit 3 South at Kettering Hospital. Funeral services Monday, August 22, 2005 at 10:30 am at Memorial United Methodist Church, West Carrollton, with the Reverend Del Harper presiding. Viewing one hour prior to services.
